What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is a national competition that exists in all 50 states with 7,000 teams nationwide. In the High School division there are 23 events grouped into five main areas: Life, Personal & Social Science, Earth & Space Science, Physical Science & Chemistry, Technology & Engineering, and Inquiry & Nature of Science.
Where it all began...
The Kinder HSPVA Science Olympiad team was formed in the fall of 2012 after Shylah Crowder, a sophomore at the time, randomly approached Mr. Landry and asked "Would you be willing to sponsor a Science Olympiad team?" Not really knowing what all it entailed he said "Sure" thinking it was just another club. Little did he know what it would become!
That first year was full of surprises as the team slowly learned how each event was run. The hard work paid off though and the team placed 2nd at the regional meet allowing them to advance to State!
In it's second and third year the team grew to two full teams, but met stiff competition at the Regional meet preventing their advance to state. However, the students, for three years in a row, received the Spirit award! We continued our tradition of exploring science with one team, returning to State in 2018! The 2019-2020 school year was the last year of a Science Olympiad team at HSPVA after an eight year run. Perhaps one day it will return with renewed student interest.
